Champion student-athlete mental health with us! Make your game, tournament, or athletic event more than just competition—turn it into a Dragonfly Initiative Game.
By designating your event as a DI Game or inviting us to set up a booth, you’re showing your commitment to athlete well-being by providing student-athletes with access to vital mental health resources, education, and support.
The leap from high school to college athletics is one of the most challenging transitions in an athlete’s career. It’s also a time when mental health struggles and dropouts are most common. Our Transitioning to College Athletics Workshop equips graduating high school student-athletes with the tools, knowledge, and support they need to navigate this shift successfully.
Why it matters?
As a nonprofit organization, Dragonfly Initiative empowers student athletes to nurture their mental health and well-being through awareness, education, advocacy, and peer support networks. The importance of this cause is underscored by alarming statistics.
According to the NCAA, 30% of college student athletes report feeling overwhelmed, and 1 in 4 experience significant anxiety. Additionally, the American College Health Association found that 39% of college athletes reported feeling so depressed that it was difficult to function. Shockingly, the suicide rate among student athletes has also increased, with the NCAA noting that these individuals are at a higher risk compared to their non-athlete peers.
The environment student athletes face today is more competitive and demanding than ever. High school athletes are under pressure to perform well in their sports while also excelling academically to secure college scholarships. College athletes must balance rigorous training schedules, intense competition, and the academic challenges of higher education. High expectations from coaches, peers, and themselves can lead to significant stress and burnout. These demands, coupled with the challenges of transitioning to college life, can exacerbate mental health issues, making it essential to provide robust support systems.
By providing education and skills for mental health and well-being, we equip student athletes with the tools they need to manage stress, build resilience, and maintain a healthy balance between their academic, athletic, and personal lives. Our efforts help create a supportive environment where student athletes can thrive both on and off the field, ensuring they have the resources to succeed holistically. Your support is vital in making a meaningful difference in their lives, helping to combat these troubling trends and fostering a healthier, more supportive athletic community.
Dragonfly Initiative draws inspiration from the dragonfly, a symbol of adaptability, resilience, and graceful change. Dragonflies navigate their environments with ease, adjusting to new conditions and demonstrating remarkable strength. They are known for their ability to swiftly adjust to wind and storms, symbolizing resilience in the face of adversity. Dragonflies also represent self-realization, transformation, and the ability to see beyond illusions.
Similarly, strong mental health empowers student athletes to adapt to the challenges they face, from rigorous training schedules to academic pressures. By fostering resilience and the ability to thrive amidst change, we help student athletes maintain balance and well-being, enabling them to soar both on and off the field. Just as dragonflies embody transformation, clarity, and flexibility, our student athletes can achieve their full potential with robust mental health support.
Dragonfly Initiative embraces the green ribbon as a symbol of mental health awareness and advocacy. Just as the green ribbon represents a commitment to improving mental health and reducing stigma, we are dedicated to supporting student athletes in their mental health journey.
By promoting awareness, providing resources, and fostering a supportive community, we align with the green ribbon's mission to advocate for mental well-being. Our efforts aim to create a safe environment where student athletes can thrive, reinforcing the importance of mental health and encouraging open conversations about the challenges they face.
Dragonfly team member Trinity Grimes will be at the Dragonfly booth from approximately 9:30 am until 6 pm. Stop by, say "Hey!", get the scoop on Dragonfly Initiative, and find resources for helping student-athletes overcome mental health challenges and improve wellbeing.
